The colouring book is in!

IMG_3641

Exciting news – the colouring book has been published! I received my author copies today from Canterbury Press, and the package was opened with much enthusiasm. [See Fig 1. Scatter cushions go flying, etc.]

It is nice to see the new drawings I’ve done specifically for the book in print, and some that were previously only available in a small size in A4. Thanks Canterbury Press – I think it looks great.

To give you an idea of the kind of pictures are inside here’s a double spread taken fairly at random, and photographed (not terribly well, it must be said) in our garden a few minutes ago. You can see a few other sample pictures here on my CartoonChurch.com site.

So how can you get a copy? The book is available by ordering from your local bookshop, or the following places:

If you buy the book and colour some of it do send me a photo of your colouring. I’ll tweet or retweet the best ones.

To those going along to the Greenbelt Festival this year do see my post about the colouring event we are running there. Saturday, 3pm, with a signing (I think) at 6pm.

Thanks to all who have been so enthusiastic about sharing and retweeting and liking my Twitter and Facebook posts about the book. And especially to those who take the time to write reviews on well-known websites that allow reviews – they are hugely appreciated and make a real difference – thank you.

To everyone who buys the book – I really hope you enjoy it.

2012 calendar

2012 DW calendar

The author copies of my 2012 calendar arrived yesterday, which means that they are available for the incredibly organised to buy. The calendar is a bit different to previous years, in that instead of new material it contains 12 of my favourite ‘Guide to the Church’ cartoons. I have hand-picked them, which means I chose them without using any kind of mechanical device. Some of the diagrams are in the books, but some of them have not appeared anywhere else but the Church Times. I’m sorry that there aren’t new cartoons this time around, but I’m hoping that a collection of some of my best pictures will still make it a good thing to give as a present, etc.

The Canterbury Press (they are my publishers) page about the calendar is here, a similar looking one from Church House Bookshop is here, and the Amazon UK page is here. I’d recommend ordering it through your local Christian Bookshop if you can. Go in and have a chat with them while you are about it. If you are a shop why not talk to Canterbury Press about stocking it?

Guide to the Church Calendar 2011: Church HQ

Dave Walker Calendar 2011

It is of course a little early to be thinking about 2011, but for any extremely well-organised shoppers I am pleased to be able to announce that my 2011 ‘Dave Walker Guide to the Church’ calendar is now available. Well, at least one shop (Church House Bookshop) has it, which must mean it can now be obtained.

About the calendar. The theme is ‘Church HQ’, and is a depiction of what the church (I’ll leave you to decide which one) would look like if it had all of its functions organised centrally. So we have, for instance, the Kneeler Approval Department, the Sermon Illustration Lending Library, the National Flower Rota, and so on and so forth. There are 12 cartoons, cunningly arranged one per month, all of them new and unique to this calendar.

As I said a month or two ago, drawing this thing nearly killed me, and at the time I said, with all sincerity, ‘never again’. I shall probably change my mind, but we shall see. That said I think it is one of my favourite sets of cartoons from the various things I’ve done, which sounds rather like a desperate ‘please buy this’ kind of a plea, even if it isn’t intended to.

The style of the cartoons is a bit different to usual, in that they are all complete individual scenes rather than a mixture of formats. I’ve taken some inspiration from the work of one of my favourite humorous illustrators from the last century, William Heath Robinson. Not so much in terms of contraptions or inventions (though there might be one or two) or even the humour necessarily, but more the way the scenes are laid out. Not that my draughtsmanship comes even close to matching his.

I like to think that there are not too many ‘in jokes’ in this calendar and that someone unfamiliar with church would still appreciate it, but perhaps I’m not the person to make that judgement. Anyway, I hope you enjoy it when the time comes for thinking about such things.

Places you can find the calendar:

[Aside: Yes, I know, the sidebars are way out of date as they still show this year’s calendar. Will update shortly.]

[Aside 2: Please forgive the ‘teapots’ mockup of this cover that appears on the various shopping sites owing to my slowness in getting artwork to people. The one above is the actual cover.]

The Exciting World of Churchgoing

exciting world of churchgoing

I’m pleased to be able to announce that a third book of my diagrams has just been published. It is called ‘The Exciting World of Churchgoing’.

The book contains 90 cartoons from my Church Times ‘Guide to the Church’ series, and costs £6.99. The publisher is Canterbury Press – their page about the book is here: Dave Walker – The Exciting World of Churchgoing. There are also webpages on Church House Bookshop, Waterstones and Amazon. You can of course be able to buy it from a local Christian bookshop. If you wanted to ask them to stock it that would of course be marvellous.

Guide to the Church 2010 calendar: Situations vacant

2010 calendar

I’m pleased to say that my 2010 ‘Guide to the Church’ calendar is now available. It contains 12 brand new cartoons that are not available anywhere else. It is subtitled ‘situations vacant’ and is a guide to some of the jobs that you can do in church, for example bell ringer, choir member, cleaner, PCC member, coffee rota volunteer etc etc.

Producing 12 extra cartoons nearly caused my expiration, as it does every year. I really am only remotely funny once a week, meaning that such an extra effort resulted in blood, sweat and tears. Well, no blood, thinking about it. And not much sweat except when I kept the fan heater on too long. But some tears. Secretly though I am rather pleased with the cartoons – having not looked at them for a number of months I quite enjoyed them when my box of calendars arrived at the end of last week.

You can buy the calendar, which costs £5.99, via your local Christian bookshop (You might or might not have to order it), at Church House bookshop in Westminster (or online – they post overseas) or direct from the publisher, Canterbury Press (who also post overseas). Waterstones are listing it, but say 2-3 weeks delivery and then there’s Amazon, though it is currently out of stock.

The ISBN which will be useful for ordering via your local bookshop is 9781853119576

Update: The calendar is available on Amazon.com for those in the US.

My Pew: Things I have seen from it

I’m pleased to announce that ‘My Pew: Things I have seen from it’ is now available.

My Pew: Things I have seen from it

The book contains 90 cartoons, nearly all of which are from my Church Times ‘Guide to the Church’ series. There is also a cartoon introduction, which takes the total up to 91. It has taken over a year and a half to do these drawings (not full time – I have had breaks for meals and to do household chores etc). They represent many days of anxiety and pacing to and fro, but also hours of fun thinking up the ideas and talking them over with friends and passers-by. Not to mention many Cartoon Blog threads on which you, the readers, have given your ideas, for which I am genuinely grateful.

The book costs £5.99. Canterbury Press are once again the publishers. Their page about the book is here.

You can also buy the book from all manner of places. Church House bookshop has it here, or if you prefer do a search on Amazon.

Alternatively why not support a local bookseller and buy the book from there? Some Christian bookshops will have it – if in doubt phone them and ask. You can find the number in the Christian bookshops directory. If they do not believe that there is such a book tell them that the ISBN number is 9781853118999. They should be able to order it for you. Other bookshops will stock it too, but once again you might have to order it.

The Dave Walker Guide to the Church 2009 Calendar

Please excuse two ‘publications’ posts on the same day – it just so happens that they’ve come into stock within a day of each other.

2009 Dave Walker calendar

The Dave Walker Guide to the Church 2009 Calendar is published by Canterbury Press. This year’s theme is ‘Things to take to church’. All of the pages of cartoons are new apart from one. They took me ages. Subjects include:

  • What to take and what to leave at home
  • How to decide what to wear
  • A pre-church planner
  • Things to take if you have small children
  • Why you should or should not take a mobile phone
  • Liquid refreshment
  • Things you will need to explain if you take a friend
  • Things to take home from church
  • Medicinal products you will need

Oddly enough I did a post on February 10 2008 asking for your ideas on the subject of ‘things to take to church’. Your answers in the comments were a great help to me and sustained me through the long nights of toil. So thank you – seriously.

The Canterbury Press page is here. Church House Bookshop have it in stock, priced £5.99. They do mail order. If you’re looking to order it elsewhere the ISBN number is 9781853118746.

I’ll post soon about my new cartoon book, which is due out in August or hopefully even July. In the meantime information about it is available on the internet, but I’m not telling you where.

What am I doing here?

what am I doing here

I’ve just heard that ‘What am I doing here’, the book I’ve contributed cartoons to is now available. It is published by Church House Publishing – the page on their website [Link broken – removed].

Church House Bookshop contacted me this morning to say they have it in stock – see this page. They do mail order. It should be available in lots of other places as well – the ISBN number is 9780715141618 if you want to order or search for it somewhere.

There are about 8 cartoons I think – one for each of most of the chapters. I’ve posted one below. I’ll admit that at first I was hesitant to do the cartoons for this book as I was stressed with other things at the time, but when I read the manuscript I said yes. It goes through a typical Anglican communion service and explains why we do what we do. I think it could be a really useful book to (for example) give to newcomers who are not used to church services and all the strange things that happen in them. I’ve posted the publisher’s description below.

coffee time

Have you ever wondered what church is all about? Ever found yourself in a service wondering what on earth is going on? And what the point of it all is?

Whether you’re completely new to church or have been coming to church for a while, this little book is here to help you!

With a down-to-earth style and subtle humour, What am I Doing Here? takes you through an Anglican Holy Communion service, demystifying what happens – and why.

Subjects covered include:

* What are you doing here?: The need to meet your maker
* Worship: The need to celebrate and count our blessings
* Confession: The need for accounting procedures and a clean slate
* Sermons: The need for wise words and challenging questions
* The Creed: The need for a basic belief system
* Prayer: The need to engage with the wider world and ask for help
* The Peace: The need to live in right relationship with others
* Holy Communion: The need for strength, comfort and delight
* Being sent out and the after-church chat: The need to share the journey

Hilary Brand is the best-selling author of Christ and the Chocolaterie and The Sceptic’s Guide to the Bible. As an ordinary pew-dweller rather than a church leader, she’s in an ideal position to empathise with newcomers.

Dave Walker is one of the best-known Christian cartoonists in the UK. He runs www.cartoonchurch.com and contributes the weekly ‘Dave Walker Guide to the Church’ cartoon in the Church Times.

Some examples of cartoons from the book are now here.

The best places to buy the book:
There are various options:

  1. You can buy it directly from the publisher, SCM Canterbury Press
  2. By ordering it at a local bookshop (Quote ISBN number 9781853117794)
  3. Online from such stockists as Church House bookshop, SPCK Online, Waterstones, Wesley Owen, Amazon UK or Amazon USA.
  4. You might find it on the shelves of a bookshop locally. See below for possible locations.

Shops where a physical copy has been seen on the shelves by Cartoon Blog readers:

If you are making a special journey I would advise telephoning the shop first, as this list is probably out of date by now.

Shops that have ordered the book at some point:
The publishers have sent me this list. It includes every shop that has ordered a copy of the book, but it does not necessarily mean that there is a copy on the shelves as they might have ordered a copy in for a customer or sold out. You are advised to check before travelling – doing a Google search will usually give you a telephone number.
