But if I am rocking the boat, it’s only because I think we may be about to capsize.
I’d like to point out that I do not read the Mail on Sunday.
Update: Response from Cranmer Hall: Cranmer Hall saddened by misleading claims in Mail on Sunday
I am too scared to write any comments on the mail’s page (and slightly scared to write soemthing here as well) just in case the tory thought police get me. It is such a shame that the poor lad didn’t get that it isn’t one person’s choice to not ordain him. I wonder why he can’t take criticism or follow college practices? I am sure that his Bishop didn’t prevent him from being ordained for any other reason than his inability to ‘play nicely with other people’. I hope I never get into a boat with him – that’s for sure!
I suspect there’s considerably more to this story than the Mail would have us believe.
It’s fascinating that this article appeared the same day that Michael Hampson was interviewed on radio 4 saying that the C of E is now run by fundamentalist evangelicals.
Truth is we’re rather messily somewhere (maybe multiple somewheres)between these two extremes.
makes me wonder. if this guy had gone somewhere else, beginning with ‘O’ and ending in ‘hill’, would he have a problem? my my, isn’t it all very messy………
I have much sympathy with Nick Howard but regret that that he apparently didn’t feel he couldn’t communicate with those he disagreed with. If we live under the rules of the Anglican communion then we have to accept that there are all sorts of people with widely different views. Acceptance but not compromise is all part of being an Anglican methinks.
I suspect, as Emma comments, that there is rather more to this story than the Daily Mail version.
I know that the “thwarted ambition” thing is the DM headline rather than a direct quote, but it does make you wonder – since when was ordination an ambition, I always thought it was to do with serving? Personally I’m rather glad of the Anglican Church’s “fuzzy edges”, which does more to communicate the mysteries of God to me than black/white right/wrong dichotomies which the article seems to be sugesting Mr Howard subscribes to. I guess I’m just one of those pesky PC libruls he seems to object to so much.
Doesn’t rocking usually make the boat more likely to capsize?
He definitely doesn’t show much sense.
The boy would be better off sitting down quietly in the centre. This will help the boat stabilise. 😉
my faith in the selection process is restored.
I have posted a link to the article about Nick Howard on my own blog. I think it is very sad that a man with orthodox views is rejected by his bishop after getting through the selection process (Ash take note).
I suspect the truth of this story will be more about the character and attitude of the man. Some prophetic people are called to infiltrate the institution and speak from within (eg Nathan and Isaiah). Others are called to confront from the edges (eg Elijah and Jeremiah).
It is hard to subvert an organisation if you go in with both guns bazing.

For what its worth, I met Nick Howard at Durham several times and talking to him was very much like talking to a brick wall. I’m not surprised he was accused of being unwilling to listen. The article seems strangely rosy-tinted…
