Shoddy workmanship

I have chosen one of the busiest weeks I have known for quite a while to paint a set of my black ash shelves. I am painting them white, of all colours. After the first coat they looked awful, after the second the workmanship looked shoddy, after the third there were still darker patches showing through.

There is a method to my madness – all will be revealed in due course.
